EDUCATIONAL VISITS:

At Sea Mere the serious encouragement of enironmental awareness is approached in a fun and memorable way.

A visit to Sea Mere brings the study of science and nature to life.  The beautiful surroundings provide the ideal environment for nurturing a lifelong fascination and consideration for the world of the outdoor classroom.

Each visit to Sea Mere can be tailored to the individual needs of the group from a wide, non-prescriptive selection of activities.  Children can gain key skills through their own investigations, observations and recording of findings.  Regular visits over the year allow the chance for first hand observation of the seasonal changes.

Various aspects of the National Curriculum can be addressed at Sea Mere in an interesting and practical way.

In the Foundation Stage children will be encouraged to develop their 'Knowledge and Understanding of the World' and be observed generating their own learning opportunities and investigations.

For Key Stages One and Two, activities are arranged that will encourage children's awareness of the variety of plants and animals

  • their habitats

  • life-cycles, seed production and dispersal

  • identification and using classification keys

  • watching food chains and food webs in action

Practical issues:

The education room is heated for year round use and seats 30 children.  There are toilet facilities, a small kitchen so that drinks can be prepared for children and teachers, and parking for a coach or minibus and cars.

Visits usually last between 2 and 3 hours and are FREE for educational groups.

Children will be taught by Jilly Baines, an experienced KS1/2 teacher, or Rory Hart a specialist in environmental conservation.  Both have an enthusiasm for the subject and a thorough understanding of plant and animal life.

Contact the Sea Mere Study Centre for more information or to book a visit.  We welcome planning visits by school staff and are especially glad when we can arrange a programme to tie in with the work being done in the school classroom.
